In 1962, on the eve of the publication of "A Different Drummer" William Melvin Kelley wrote "If You're Woke You Dig It; No mickey mouse can be expected to follow today's Negro idiom without a hip assist" for the New York Times. Kelley went on to publish more work and become known as one of the earliest users of the word "woke" in its proper context.
